Absolute MMA were back for their second event on October 15 live from the Deerfoot Inn & Casino in Calgary, Alberta. The night of action was headlined by 3 pro fights, including a matchup between Mac Laursen and Lee Gaudet.
Welterweight prospect Mac Laursen was looking to keep his amazing year rolling with a third win in three fights in the main event. Lee Gaudet wanted nothing to do with Laursen’s highly touted striking so he tried to engage in grappling as soon as possible. However, Laursen made him pay for it as he reversed his takedown attempt and spent the whole first round on top doing damage. It was more of the same in the second and it was clear Gaudet would not be able to take it for much more longer as Laursen secured the TKO finish to stay perfect this year.
Kristopher Bryan was trying to avenge the loss he suffered in his first pro fight when he collided with tough Dylan Schellenberg. The fight rapidly turned into a grappling heavy affair and Bryan clearly was the better grappler. Even tough he was fatigued in round 3, he turned up the pace a notch when he felt Schellenberg had nothing left and he was able to secure a TKO finish on the ground.
Veteran Andrew Bard was fighting for the first time since 2018 as he welcomed Codi Burkitt to the pro circuit. The pair had a very fun and competitive first round which could have gone either way. Bard was looking like the fresher fighter early in round 2 and he was able to take over the fight from there, spending plenty time on top of his opponent who was trying armbars from his guard in vain. Andrew Bard got the decision on the judges scorecard for his first win since 2012.
Amateur Highlights
Mustafa Azma and Brennan Kimpinski absolutely went to war for most of their 9 minute amateur fight. They both landed some major heat on the feet and both had their opponent hurt at multiple moments in the fight. Both were also able to implement some wrestling and some good takedown defense for a very fun fight. Azma was awarded the decision in the end.
Chris Bergen concluded the amateur portion of the card with a second round submission win over Jesse Richardson in an impressive performance. Despite being way older than his opponent, 40 years old Derrick Hornick dominated Anfrej Dimitrovski with his superior grappling to win by decision. Curtis Busch looked good as he only needed 1:19 to defeat Sam Khan by Guillotine.
